Inguinal, femoral and ventral hernia care
Groin hernias: inguinal and femoral
Bring a history of the lump, pain and changes with activity. A female surgeon can assess the groin and discuss the type of hernia and appropriate repair. Ask about privacy and a chaperone before examination.
Ventral, umbilical and incisional hernias
These involve the abdominal wall, navel or a previous incision. Previous repair records help the surgeon plan assessment. Discuss whether open or keyhole repair is suitable and how the plan affects lifting, work and recovery.
A suddenly painful, stuck bulge or vomiting needs emergency assessment.
What is a hernia?
A hernia forms when tissue pushes through a weak area in the abdominal wall. It may appear in the groin, around the navel or near a previous surgical incision.
What needs checking?
Your clinician examines the bulge and asks about discomfort, changes and previous operations. Imaging is sometimes needed.
Do all hernias need immediate repair?
It depends on the type, symptoms and risk of complications. Some men with a minimally symptomatic inguinal hernia may discuss watchful waiting. This approach is not appropriate for everyone.
How is repair planned?
Open and keyhole approaches are available. Mesh is often used to reinforce the wall. Ask about the reason for the chosen repair, anaesthesia, recurrence, persistent pain, infection and other individual risks.
Returning to everyday life
The timeline depends on the repair and your activities. Ask separately about walking, desk work, driving and lifting. Follow the operating team’s instructions.
When is it urgent?
A suddenly painful or stuck bulge, vomiting, or skin colour change needs emergency assessment. Do not wait for a routine appointment.
