Understanding pilonidal sinus
A pilonidal sinus is an opening or tunnel in the skin at the top of the cleft between the buttocks. It can become infected, with pain, swelling or discharge. A clinician needs to examine the area to confirm the cause.
Your consultation with a female surgeon
Tell Dr Richa when symptoms began, whether there have been previous episodes, and about any drainage procedure or operation. Bring previous prescriptions and operation records. You can ask about privacy arrangements and request a chaperone when booking.
Discuss the treatment plan
An abscess may need drainage. Recurrent disease may need a planned procedure; the choice depends on its extent and previous treatment. Ask which options are suitable, how the wound will be managed, and the risk of recurrence. Confirm whether a laser-based or flap procedure is appropriate and who will perform it.
- What does the examination show?
- Is treatment needed now, and what are the alternatives?
- What dressing care and follow-up will I need?
- When can I return to sitting, work and exercise?
When to seek prompt care
A painful swelling, bleeding or pus needs prompt clinical assessment. If you feel seriously unwell, seek urgent hospital care. Do not wait for a routine website appointment or message reply.
