Discuss your concern

What is the problem?

Gallstones are solid deposits in the gallbladder, a small organ beneath the liver that stores bile. Many cause no symptoms. A stone blocking a duct can cause upper-right abdominal pain.

How is it assessed?

Your clinician asks about the pain, examines you and may arrange blood tests and an ultrasound. Other conditions can cause similar symptoms.

Does it always need surgery?

Silent stones often need no treatment. For symptomatic stones, gallbladder removal is a common option. A stone in the main bile duct may need a different procedure, such as ERCP. Discuss the options for your findings.

What happens during treatment?

Keyhole surgery uses small incisions and a camera. Sometimes an open operation is needed. Gallbladder removal has risks, including infection, bleeding, bile leakage and bile-duct injury.

What about recovery?

Discharge and recovery are different milestones. Some patients go home the same day; returning to normal activities takes longer. Ask for individual advice on food, wound care, driving and work.

When is it urgent?

Persistent severe pain, fever, vomiting or yellow skin or eyes needs urgent medical assessment.
