YOUR VISIT, CLEARLY EXPLAINED

Keyhole, open or laser?

The technique is one part of a treatment decision. Understand why an approach is recommended for your condition. Consult Dr Richa Mishra, female general and GI surgeon in Bengaluru, for an individual assessment.

What does keyhole surgery mean?

Laparoscopy uses small incisions, a camera and instruments to perform an operation. It may offer benefits for suitable patients, but it is not appropriate for every condition.

Why might an open operation be needed?

The condition, previous operations, anatomy or findings during surgery may make an open approach more appropriate. Ask whether conversion from keyhole to open surgery is a possibility in your case.

What about laser treatment?

Laser is a tool used in selected procedures. It is not a guarantee of a painless operation, no complications or no recurrence. Ask how it compares with the alternatives for your diagnosis.

Questions that support a decision

  • Why is this technique suitable for me?
  • What are the reasonable alternatives?
  • What are the benefits and risks in my situation?
  • What happens if the planned approach needs to change?
