Understanding Pancreatic & Biliary Disorders
The pancreas is a vital gland situated deep in the upper abdomen behind the stomach. It produces crucial digestive enzymes that break down proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, as well as hormones like insulin that regulate blood glucose levels.
Because the pancreatic duct joins the common bile duct before entering the small intestine, issues in the gallbladder (such as gallstones) frequently trigger pancreatic inflammation, known as gallstone pancreatitis.
Conditions Evaluated & Managed
- Acute Pancreatitis: Sudden, severe inflammation of the pancreas, often triggered by gallstones or alcohol. Characterized by severe epigastric pain radiating through to the back.
- Chronic Pancreatitis: Persistent inflammation leading to permanent tissue damage, recurring pain, malabsorption, and digestive enzyme deficiency.
- Pancreatic Cysts & Pseudocysts: Fluid-filled sacs that can develop following episodes of pancreatitis or trauma.
- Biliary-Pancreatic Obstruction: Gallstones lodged in the ampulla of Vater blocking enzyme and bile outflow, causing jaundice and pain.
